Consumers Seek Solutions as Bed Bugs Invade Central Texas

They come in concentrates, ready to use formulas, dust, liquids, and traps.

A growing list of products for an even faster growing problem: bed bugs.

“It is not uncommon for people to come in and ask for bed bug solutions. They are looking for dust and looking for mattresses. Or they need a concentrate to make a solution,” said Hope Bay Moriarty, employee for Producers Coop.

In desperation, people go through crazy lengths to get rid of bed bugs.

Once almost non-exisistent, bed bugs have comeback with a vengeance.

“We are using more and more abates for things like cockroaches and termites, so we aren’t using the same pesticides on the interior structures like we used to. Therefore, the bed bugs have escaped being controlled inadvertentely,” said Texas A&M Entomology Professor Dr. Roger Gold.

The bed bugs get as big as an apple seed.

“They blend in with the background and they are laid with the linens associated with the beds, sheets, mattresses,” said Gold.

Sometimes dormant for months, the bugs wait to attack you at night.

“They will climb onto your body and probe with their piercing sucky mouth parts until they find a blood vessel and they will keep probing until they can find a vein or artery and then they begin to feed.”

The bites don’t appear till 24 hours after they feed.

“Bed bug bites will occur in a line. If the bed bugs are undisturbed, they’ll just line up and begin to feed.”

Bug experts say if you are going to buy products to kill bed bugs on your own, to read the labels on the back, because the chemicals can be very dangerous for you.
